I had "almost" forgotten about this challenge. Almost because I knew I had to make something, in May. But did not remember when and did not realize that May was actually already here!
Then I read a reminder on Bobbie's blog, and panicked and made a few things :-)
So here are the details about the blog hop...
Bobbie Rafferty of Beadsong Jewelry is quite taken by the Kentucky Derby, and has kicked off an annual challenge where participants are to design jewelry inspired by the outrageous, top of over the top hats that ladies wear to the Derby. The reveal, of course, is today, on the day of the Kentucky Derby. She provided the inspiration photos in a few different categories. You can see them here. Click on the green hat. She wore it to the Oaks today!
Click on that hat, go see the pictures, and you will know why I signed up for this :-)
I made two pieces...actually, just one specially for the challenge, the other one just fits one of the themes, so am going to cheat and put it in ;-) Up to you guys to figure out which one it might be :P
One of the themes was Color, Texture and Shapes.
I picked this one:
The color and shape of the hat = color and shape of the shells. The shells have shell-like texture ;-)
And the hat has a nice wide, green silk bow. Well, mine is a nice, thin green silk bow. See below...for the bow, that is
The second theme I chose is"Inspired By Nature". This photo:
I took the green color, and the yellow flowers from that picture and put them in this
So these were my entries. There's quite a few "jockeys" in this Derby! So lets say a BIG THANKS to Bobbie, and go see how they're doing....

You've really captured the colors here! and I'm loving what you're doing with fiber these days!! that second one with the filigree wrap is outstanding! LOVE it
ReplyDeleteThank you!! I am FINALLY getting a handle on the ribbons, loved them always, but never been able to create much. I have so many books and tutes bookmarked, but am still hesitating to create a basic wrapped bracelet with a button closure. Maybe...one day soon!
DeleteI love your interpretations for this challenge. I especially love the first necklace with the beautiful orang-ey shells and the lime green silk ribbon.....perfection!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Nan! I do love both those colors. Had been hoarding the silk and the shells for a very long time now, unsure of what to do with them. They were waiting for the hat I guess ;)
DeleteLove this challenge and what you did with your pieces. What fun.
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda! Those hats were quite irresistible ;) I had to make something!
DeletePerfect! Boy, you work well under panic! I can't tell you how happy those orange shells make me -- what a fantastic reflection of the inspiration hat. And the ribbon on the second necklace is as sunny and happy as the big flower hats. Great job! Thanks so much for being part of the challenge!
ReplyDeleteThanks Bobbie, first off for the wonderful inspiration and second for the compliments :)
DeleteThose shells were actually a whole bracelet, I have, like a million of them left. Want some?
OOOOOOOH. Necklace LOVE!!! These are so pretty!!!
ReplyDeletejean yates :)
Thank you :))
DeleteOoo, I like these! They both have a casual, easygoing vibe to them. I like the ribbon in the second one~very happy and full of fresh Spring :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Christine!
DeleteI have to credit a friend of mine for that ribbon...I had made a first version using a pale blue ribbon, sent her the pic, saying i am going to change the ribbon. She said do either velvet for a rich winter look, or flowers for spring. Of course, the flowers won :)
I love the colors. Now I want to wear that on the beach !!

DeleteThanks Susan! Now I want to go to the beach too :)
DeleteBeautiful, so bright and color, real show stoppers.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Kepi! I do love them both :)
DeleteHi Kashmira,
ReplyDeleteLove the two necklaces they are both beautiful my favorite is the first one. I really like the color of the green with the orange and the colors being off set by the bronze beads.
Therese
Thanks Therese!
DeleteMe loving those colors too...reminds me of popsicles!
Nice hats and very nice pieces too.
ReplyDeleteCheck my Hat at jewelrybyjasvanti@blogspot.com
Thanks Jasvanti!
DeleteVery nice job! Looks like you had fun! I think they'll both be fun to wear this summer.
ReplyDeleteThanks Karla! They were indeed inspired by Spring (the flowers) and summer (popsicle colors) :)
DeleteI guess the orange hat was popular. Awesome pieces.
ReplyDeleteI know right! Saw so many interpretations of this one!
DeleteI can't decide which necklace you made for the challenge and which one just happened to fit, because they are both great matches with the hats and they are both gorgeous! I especially like the first necklace. The way you let the green silk cord "peak" out where the spacer type beads are omitted is sooooo sweet. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThanks Liz! The first one was "on purpose" :)
DeleteI wanted more of the green to peek through, but the shells kept bunching together, so had to do this. But I still like it :)
The "favorite hat" - love what you did, the shape of the sheels are really quite neat! Your second necklace goes perfectly with the hats, love them both!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI know...there were so many entries with this hat. All so pretty and different!
Beautiful necklaces, loved the hats you used for inspiration.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dolores :)
DeleteI love the first necklace, those half moon shapes really echo the style of the hat.
ReplyDeleteThanks Laney! I have had the shells for over a year now, but never figured out a design I was happy with. NOW I am happy :)
DeleteWhat a great way to use the colors of the hats in your designs, and the flower ribbon, just love♥ it.
ReplyDeleteDini, co-participant, you find me @ http://angazabychanges.blogspot.nl instead of @ the FB address in the list :-)
Thanks Dini!
DeleteLovely, how you've used fiber to bring your designs to life. You've used it to great effect with this gorgeous palette.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I do struggle a lot while incorporating fiber, so am very happy with these!
DeleteBoth necklaces are fantastic! I love that orange/green combo!
ReplyDeleteThanks Lola!
